Constitutional Transformation
Work Stream
Constitutional Transformation (CT) is a growing movement calling for the development and implementation of an inclusive Constitution for Aotearoa based in tikanga and kawa, He Whakaputanga (The Declaration of Independence), Te Tiriti o Waitangi and other indigenous human rights instruments. This movement goes beyond tinkering and reforming the current system, and toward transformational change. It has far-reaching legal, political, social and cultural implications for all peoples in Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Constitutional Transformation Work Stream (CTWS) of the ALN operated with three goals:
to engage our members and Asian communities with CT dialogue, as imagined in the report of Matike Mai;
to develop ALN as a representative voice in this dialogue; and
to pursue Te-Tiriti-centric CT that builds a better future for Asian communities and their descendents.
The CTWS met for a retreat in 2022, to discuss, develop and envisage the ALN’s constitutional transformation strategy. They also attended and participated in the Constitutional Kōrero, where they heard from indigenous thought leaders from around the world, and from home, including Whaea Ani Mikaere, Dr Claire Charters, Whaea Annette Sykes, Dr Andrew Erueti and Justice Joe Williams.
The CTWS’ work is currently on-hold - but its goals remain core to the ALN’s visions and purpose.
