Constitutional Transformation Work Stream Retreat and Constitutional Kōrero

Our Constitutional Transformation Work Stream (CTWS) had a forest retreat to set its five-year strategic plan and prepare a workshop on Constitutional Transformation (CT) for our members, to take place next year. The retreat brought members from across the motu. We prioritised whakawhanaungatanga, through copious amounts of cooking, watching Avatar The Last Airbender and, of course, drinking tea!

On the following Monday, the CTWS headed in to the city to the Constitutional Kōrero, where we heard from indigenous thought leaders from around the world, and from home, including Whaea Ani Mikaere, Dr Claire Charters, Whaea Annette Sykes, Dr Andrew Erueti and Justice Joe Williams. We also linked up with other ALN members, Don Lye, Meri Haami, and Amarind Hun Eng. The conference looked at indigenous futures in Aotearoa, how our constitution can be transformed to better give effect to Te Tiriti and He Whakaputanga (the Declaration of Independence).

We also made sure not to pass up on bringing together other Tāmaki members and friends we made at the Conference over some food and singing!

The CTWS will send through a full update to the ALN in the new year, which will summarise the Conference and set out our preliminary analysis on the implications for ALN's work.

At the upcoming ALN Hui 2023, the CTWS will present the CTWS' strategic plan, and sign-post the upcoming workshop and report on CT.
